Forget the cookie-cutter approach. Ivy League admissions are not one-size-fits-all game.

Many students and parents believe that a single formula exists for getting into Ivy League schools – perfect grades, stellar test scores, and a laundry list of extracurricular activities. But the truth is, each Ivy League university has its own unique personality, values, and priorities. What works for Harvard might not work for Yale, and vice versa.

Ivy League Schools Aren’t All the Same

Think of Ivy League universities like different people, each with a distinct personality: So, as much as it feels good to belong, maintain the status quo with friends, and share common activities and interests – dare to step away and be as different as each of these schools.

  • Harvard: values leaders and changemakers. They want students to be driven, ambitious, and ready to make an impact. The school’s culture is known for its “big picture thinking.” So, if you are someone who wants to ‘initiate change’ – imagine founding companies, leading large-scale organisations and projects, or pushing cutting-edge research – then Harvard is that powerhouse school you should consider.
  • Yale: is about discussions, debates, and creative explorations. Because of Yale’s strong liberal arts focus and strong sense of community, the school values intellectual depth over pure hustle. So, if you are someone who enjoys talking about ‘ideas,’ love ‘writing,’ and thrive in deep ‘discussions’ – Yale might just be that thinker’s haven you just don’t want to miss.
  • Princeton: is often termed as a ‘scholar’s playground,’ where your independent interests can find home within its structured learning and research-focused education. Unlike some of the other Ivies, Princeton has a strong undergraduate focus that translates into less distraction from graduate students, access to top-notch professors, and rigorous coursework. So, if you are someone who genuinely loves learning, thrives under structured challenges, and wants a close-knit academic environment, then calling Princeton home will be ideal.
  • Columbia: is not for the faint-hearted. You will call New York your home, so you must be ready to thrive in a fast, competitive, and global environment. This also translates into you being a highly independent student who can seamlessly network and make the most of Columbia’s broad-based core education curriculum. Therefore, if you love multitasking, city life, and constant intellectual stimulation, then Columbia’s energy and experience are right up your sleeve.
  • Penn: is all about collaboration and ambition. Known for its world-class business education and pre-professional-focused education, Penn is about real-world applications and hands-on learning. Thus, if you have a clear professional goal and seek a result-oriented environment, then Penn is a professional hub totally worth that rigour and deep connections.
  • Dartmouth: is well known for its small classes and tight knit community. One of the smaller ivy league schools with strong undergraduate focus, Dartmouth, is about forging those personal connections with the power of ivy resources. Dartmouth also offers the D-Plan quarter system, which allows an exceptional amount of freedom to structure one’s own term around academics, study abroad terms, research, and internships. Therefore, if you value tradition, connections, and collaboration, and a supportive community around you, then Dartmouth would tick all the right boxes of home away from home.
  • Brown: is all about free spirit. An open curriculum means that you have the power to shape your own educational experience. If you are creative, explorative, and believe in self-directed efforts and value independence, then Brown offers ultimate academic freedom. However, remember that you can get lost too – so tread cautiously. So, if you are self-motivated and have the confidence to grow into and with your experiences – then Brown holds the key to that exploration.
  • Cornell: is the youngest and the largest of the ivies. So, the school goes above and beyond to offer it all. Their wide-ranging academic disciplines mean that they meet every possible academic interest – from agriculture to technology to hospitality management. It offers several professionally focused specialisation options – this school is best if you want practical education without urban distraction.

Why a Personalized Strategy Matters

If these schools can be as different as chalk and cheese, do you think a one-size-fits-all application works here? The answer is a resounding NO!

So, do not try to fit the mould – think and be different! Focus on

What makes you you? Your unique strengths and interests

Research deeply – what they offer and how you fit with each school

Use a Tailored narrative: You cannot do so many different activities to fit into each of them. Instead, use your essays, recommendations, and extracurriculars to reflect on and showcase what each school values.

And here’s the parting advice

While you want to stand out and perfectly fit into any of these schools – stop trying to impress the cookie cutter way – instead aim for the right positioning. For example:

Let us say that you started a sustainable fashion collective and partnered with gated housing communities and NGOs to increase awareness of and use of upcycled products. If you are applying to Penn, your application should focus on your ability to apply knowledge practically and create impact, while at Brown, you will focus on your intellectual curiosity to explore. At Penn, you can highlight how you work in teams, and at Brown, you can show why you are a self-directed learner open to experimentation.

Show each of them that you truly belong there. The activities are the same, but your positioning cannot be. Stop aiming for a boring, accomplished profile – be daring and dynamic, and be different to stand out!
